If you are looking to go on a wonderful, adventure-filled trip, but you don’t have a lot of money to spend, backpacking might be right up your alley. There are many ways to backpack on the cheap and there are many places around the world that are extremely conducive to backpacking.
One place, in particular, that is known for its backpacking friendly travel is Europe. The reason for this, is that European countries are relatively small and all of them are linked by very efficient rail systems. You can buy plane a ticket to any big city in Europe and get around the whole continent simply using the train system. You can even buy package deals on the train system known as Euro-passes and country hop for very little money. The great thing about this, is that you will be experiencing many different languages and countries without having to take long and expensive plane rides. You will also be able to use the Euro as currency in almost every country you travel to, therefore you will not have to worry about exchanging currencies at every stop. Europe also offers a wide array of youth hostels, which allow for cheap, clean, friendly housing throughout your journey. You can buy a guide book that will explain just where to go during your trip and recommend interesting routes.
Another fun place to backpack is Thailand. Thailand is very inexpensive for travelers and offers beautiful beaches and interesting sites. A very large number of your Australians and Europeans venture to Thailand every year for partying and fun. Backpacking is big in Thailand since there are a lot of young travelers who do not have a lot money. They are often traveling on a break from school, before entering into graduate school, or during a transitional periods in their life where they have a good portion of time to travel and enjoy a different part of the world. Thailand is interesting for it’s magnificent old temples and it’s natural resources. Travelers enjoy some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world, as well as peaceful relaxation in white sand beaches. Like Europe, Thailand offers travelers inexpensive youth hostels as an alternative to the expensive hotels. It is easy to get around Thailand and enjoy yourself on a relatively little amount of money.
Once you are in Thailand, you also might consider going to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. These countries are a lot less traveled then Thailand, and offer less in the way of “Tourist attractions,” but they may interest a more adventurous backpacker, who is looking to get off of the beaten path.
When backpacking, it may be wise to plan your itinerary in advance, although this is not necessary, and many people prefer to plan as they go. Although some places are more “backpacker-friendly,” there are not many places in the world that you couldn’t backpack. All you need is a map, a backpack, and an adventurous spirit. With those things in hand, all you need to do is be safe and enjoy!
