Planning Your Honeymoon

Preparation for selecting your honeymoon dream destination need not be a daunting chore. While undergoing a myriad of decisions in formalizing wedding plans, make planning your honeymoon an enjoyable task. There are a few considerations to initiate the process, but once you make some basic choices, your in-depth research can begin. The first two main topics to contemplate are the type of honeymoon you want and the amount of money in your budget to cover all expenses.

Determine What Type of Honeymoon You Want

Start by determining if you and your fiance prefer a warm or cold climate? What are your recreational interests? Are you envisioning the snowy slopes of an alpine ski lodge, or possibly a warm climate where you can wear shorts and sink your toes into the sand? Will you be driving or flying?

Honeymoon cruises are a popular option. Are you more inclined to cruise to the warm Caribbean or maybe a cooler climate like Alaska? Another similar idea if your budget allows is an exciting European cruise or selecting a romantic European river cruise.

Maybe you need to stay relatively close to home and are swayed more toward a nice weekend get-away in a secluded cozy location? Once you have make your first basic decision as to what you want to do and where you want to go, the next step to consider is the amount of money you have to work with.

Planning Within Your Budget

Budgeting funds for your honeymoon need not be difficult once you categorize all possible expenses that may be incurred. Begin this step of the planning process by listing typical known expenses such as airfare, parking costs, car rental, gasoline, hotel accommodations, tours or excursions, food, beverages, and souvenirs. It is a good idea to leave some funds available for miscellaneous or unexpected expenses that may come your way.

Researching Travel Destinations

Now how do you determine actual amounts for each of your expense categories? You can choose to contact a travel agency that will be happy to make all of the arrangements for you. They will provide you with an itemized travel itinerary listing all costs minus your miscellaneous expenses. The travel agent will ask questions to determine what is available that matches your ideal honeymoon requirements.

If you have an adventurous nature, you may chose to research and book your own honeymoon travel plans. Start with a major internet search engine and research topics such as hotel locator, airline tickets, cruise vacations, vacation packages, all inclusive vacations, tours and places of interest.

Hotel accommodations are tailored to meet every traveler’s budget. You may choose to book a reservation at a hotel that offers a small kitchenette which allows saving on dining expenses.

Get creative, have fun while you explore the many available options. Log the pricing information to track expenses and book early to prevent price increases.

Travel Confirmations and Documents

Don’t fail to receive confirmation numbers. It is wise to print-out all confirmation paperwork received via email. It is also a good idea to include receipts and any remaining amounts due in the event you are quoted an incorrect amount during check-out.

Keep all travel documents and confirmations together. If you are traveling abroad or have decided on a romantic honeymoon cruise plan ahead well in advance to apply for your passport. A passport is required for any type of international travel, so don’t get caught with last minute challenges due to improper travel documentation.

Pack Appropriately Not Excessively

Pack according to what you need rather than including extra garments that you might decide to wear. Regardless of the climate to which you are traveling always pack a sweater, shawl or jacket. Keep in mind air conditioning even when honeymooning in a tropical location. Remember to pack hats, sun visors, sunscreen, and Dramamine if cruising.

Last Minute Travel Preparation

On your big day before you walk down the isle, or before you watch your bride walk down the isle, entrust your important travel documents to a much trusted friend or family member. This is someone who’s one responsibility is to deliver all travel documents to you as you prepare to leave the reception and begin your honeymoon. This includes your itinerary, confirmations, traveler’s checks, phone numbers, tickets, tour confirmations, passports, maps, driving directions, etc.
