Hotels, motels, and resorts have historically relied on business travelers to fill their facilities. Since 2004, though, the number of people traveling for business has fallen substantially. And it doesn’t look like businesses are going to start sending more employees on the road any time soon.
Although the number of business travelers has fallen, hotels have found that more leisure travelers book rooms throughout the week. Leisure travelers include families on vacation, honeymooners, and people traveling for special occasions. Currently, leisure travelers make up 54 percent of the market.
This means that many hotels are to change their looking for new marketing strategies that focus on families and couples.
The changes could bring a whole new atmosphere to your next vacation.
Marriott International, for instance, now has programs designed to attract families with young children. Some of the chain’s hotels now include bath toys, slip covers for cribs, baby lotion, and activity books. The hotel even plans to offer SpongeBob backpacks that include sunglasses, a splash ball, and other items. The backpack will cost guests an additional $10.
For $20, guests will receive pillow cases and a book along with the backpack. The packages should be available in July.
Hotels are also developing entertainment and meal programs that will attract more leisure travelers. Some Homewood Suites locations now include free beer and wine during the week (Monday-Thursday). The chain has also improved its free breakfast by including healthy options such as omelets, turkey sausage, and frittatas. These selections should appeal to health-conscious Gen-Xers who are taking their children on vacation.
When looking for hotels this summer, ask the facilities what types of amenities they include with rooms. Free cocktails or a healthy breakfast could help you save money on your trip. And an inexpensive cartoon-themed backpack full of goodies could keep the kids quiet for a few hours in the backseat.
