In just a couple weeks, Spirit Airlines will add a fee for travelers with carry on luggage. Most
people have gotten used to packing all of their belongings into small bags specifically to avoid check in baggage fees. Spirit, however, has decided to tack on $45 for any carry ons stashed in overhead compartments starting in August.
The news has outraged some people who use Spirit’s low-fare option to travel for business and pleasure. The company, however, maintains that the carry on fee will help them keep ticket prices low. The airline also hopes that the fee will encourage fliers to leave excess luggage at home, which will make flights safer.
David Castelveter, a spokesperson for Air Transport Association, tells CNN that he doesn’t know of any other airlines that charge for carry on luggage.
Spirit Airlines has also announced that it will lower fees for checked baggage. At $15, the reduced price, however, does not balance out the new fee.
