For “foodies” on the one hand, and casual eaters on the other, there is nothing like authentic cultural food, regardless of the variety. With a fantastic Thai population calling Hollywood, California their home, Los Angeles’s Thai Town boasts many fine restaurants, each with their own spin on southeast Asian dining. But only a couple of these restaurants rise above the rest. And Jitlada is at the top of the heap.
Food critic for the cultural rag LA Weekly Jonathon Gold applied his gastronomic pen to a fine review of this family-owned authentic Thai favorite, and things that were already good for Jitlada got even better. Apparently, at one point early on, there was a “secret menu” that was only available somewhere online. Lined with southern Thai specialties and home to a truly flame-inspiring hot sauce on certain dishes, Jitlada is enough to make the most die-hard enthusiast of Thai cuisine flip their lid.
Details and Menu for Jitlada Thai Restaurant in Hollywood
It’s not gigantic inside, and often you will be waiting for some time in order to get seated. I’ve walked in on the family sitting in the dining room shortly before official evening opening time, chowing down on their own food and breaking away to find me and my friends a table. This is the real deal, people. Jazz, the name of the restaurant’s proprietor, is a real Hollywood personality, friendly to all of her patrons and as proud as she should be of her restaurant.
Word to the wise: the “hot” designation on the menu is real! Go easy on the spice, even if you consider yourself a professional spicy-food lover. Make sure you try the Pork Short Ribs with Garlic Pepper: deep fried and served with Thai chili sauce (#70 on the menu for $10.95).
